PRIVATE BOAT STORAGE
STORAGE RULES for PRIVATE BOAT OWNERS
These rules apply to all private boat owners that row out of the West Side Rowing Club and/or the Fontana Boathouse.
RULES and regulations
All rack locations are allocated by the Director of Boathouse Operations and Director of Rowing may be subject to change.
Priority is given to competitors and regular users, but the Director of Boathouse Operations will have the final word.
Storage Fee shall cover storage of one boat and one set of oars.
Shells must be labeled with name and telephone number on step boards between seat tracks or on the rack/sling.
Oars must be labeled with name and telephone number on shaft, inboard of buttons. Only one set of oars per shell. Extra oars will be $25 per set annually. Oars not labeled will be available for Club programs.
Only dues paid members of the West Side Rowing Club are permitted to row from West Side facilities.
Private boats are not permitted to row if there is no one else at the Club. Coaches & Board Members with keys may not come down & row without having someone else at the club or on the water with them.
When rowing 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset All Scullers MUST have lighting on both the bow AND stern of their boat. A green/red bow light and a white stern light
Racing crews have priority on the course.
All shells shall favor the side of the canal nearest their starboard side (during normal practice). However, it is better to stop or give way than to damage equipment or injure anyone. PLEASE do not turn in front of approaching crews unless there is at least 800 meters in between you and the other crew.
If you are exiting the Doc Schaab docks and you want to go South then you must row past the point and round the green channel marker. If you are coming from the South and you want to return to the docks you must row past the green channel marker, go around it, check for oncoming crews and then recover at the docks. Recovery at the Fontana also requires you to turn around the channel marker. If you are rowing from the North and want to recover at the Fontana you need to row o the channel marker between the Fontana and the Yacht Club. Cutting across the canal is dangerous, disruptive, and can result is serious injury.
Ferry Street is a no turn zone. Row to the channel maker or 2k mark and then turn.
Boat slings must be pulled up while rowing because the riggers hanging down are damaging 4’s and 8’s.
All persons must sign the logbook, out and in, each time they row.
Life jackets must be worn when the water temperature is between 50 and 60 degrees. When the water temperature is over 60 degrees, life jackets must be carried in the boat.
No sculler is allowed on the water until the water is over 50 degrees. When the water temperature reaches 50 degrees a life jacket must be carried in the boat at all times. Any sculler that wishes to row before the water temperature is 50 degrees must get the approval of the Vice-president of Rowing.
WSRC is not responsible for monitoring the use of private equipment.
All private boat owners will be required to comply with the mission of the West Side Rowing Club to support youth rowing in Western New York. This can be accomplished by a variety of means, including coaching, volunteering at races, work and maintenance duties at the Club, financial assistance for youth rowers, and other means approved by the Vice-president of Rowing.
All private boat owners must register via Regatta Central. All payments must be made in full before any rack will be assigned or boat will be allowed on the water.
All private boat owners agree to abide by the rules and the procedures of the West Side Rowing Club at all times. The Rowing Operations & Procedures Manual have been included below.
